The Hugh Lane Gallery marked Sarah Purser’s legacy with an exhibition and publication that celebrated her impact on Irish art.
Legacy & Elegance
The exhibition celebrated Sarah Purser – a formidable figure in Irish art during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a founding member of the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland, Purser played a pivotal role in establishing the Dublin Municipal Gallery (now the Hugh Lane). The exhibition delved into her multifaceted contributions as an artist, activist and collector. Our challenge was to design an accompanying publication that not only showcased Purser’s works and those of her contemporaries but also captured the grandeur and significance of her legacy.
Timeless Modernity
Our design approach balanced classic elegance with a contemporary sensibility. Drawing inspiration from both the Gallery’s branding and the artistic works it celebrates, we created generous open spreads that allow each piece to stand alone, replicating a gallery-like experience. Large, oversized typography provided a striking counterpoint to the traditional aesthetic of the paintings.
Cohesive & Intriguing
Working within Hugh Lane’s brand typefaces – General Sans Pro and Mirador – we crafted a design that played with unexpected hierarchies and layered type in a fresh yet cohesive manner. The book’s carefully considered size and format lend weight and grandeur befitting such a significant artist. The result is a publication that marries form and function, offering both visual intrigue and a refined reader experience.

The publication has been widely acclaimed for its ability to encapsulate the enduring legacy of Sarah Purser while engaging a modern audience.
